Quality

Cullen was the first packaging company in Scotland to obtain BS5750 accreditation, in 1989, and it continues to pursue a progressive approach to the continuous improvement of its systems.

The company has fully embraced the new version of the ISO 9001 quality standard, with a process-based system using flowcharts wherever possible. The company intranet provides instant access to the latest version of any documentation required.

Processes
Consistent with the new standard, personnel are given greater authority to make operational decisions consistent with their training and experience, and are responsible for the quality of their own output. Management then concentrate on the planning, measurement, analysis and improvement aspects.
A shop floor Data Collection System using Bar-Coding enables instant access to job status for Sales and Production personnel, as well as systematic analysis of performance in terms of a host of parameters such as job, specification, machine and crew. A waste and problem-reporting system ensures that potential difficulties are identified before they become an issue for the customer or the company. Delivery and other aspects of operations are similarly analysed through the data collection and processing systems.

ISO 14001
The company was approved to the environmental standard ISO 14001 for some time, but with increasing emphasis being placed by food customers on the new BRC/IOP document, this has now been adopted as the more relevant accreditation for the company to hold in the areas of cleanliness, product safety and environmental performance. Nevertheless, ongoing improvement in environmental management and a commitment to "green" policies remain cornerstones of the company's mission statement.
